The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced an expanded recall of organic carrots sold in Canada due to potential contamination with E. coli O121, linked to a deadly outbreak in the United States. The latest recall includes 365 Whole Foods Market brand organic carrots, which were distributed in Ontario and British Columbia.
These recalled products, supplied by Grimmway Farms, add to earlier recalls of carrots sold at major retailers including Walmart Canada, Amazon, Costco, and Sobeys under brands such as Cal-Organic, PC Organics, Compliments Organic, and Bunny-Luv.
While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported 39 illnesses, 15 hospitalizations, and one death in the United States associated with the outbreak, no illnesses have been reported in Canada to date. The CFIA emphasizes caution, urging consumers to avoid any affected products.
Public Health and Consumer Safety
Food contaminated with E. coli O121 may not appear or smell spoiled but can still pose serious health risks. Symptoms of infection include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, which may be watery or bloody. In severe cases, individuals may experience seizures, strokes, or kidney damage, which can be life-threatening.
Consumers who have purchased recalled products are advised not to consume them. Instead, products should be safely discarded or returned to the place of purchase. Those experiencing symptoms after consuming the affected carrots are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Ongoing Investigation
The CFIA has confirmed that the recall was triggered by findings from an investigation in the United States. The agency is actively conducting a food safety investigation and verifying that recalled products are removed from Canadian stores. Additional recalls may be issued as the investigation progresses.
Whole Foods Market has confirmed that the recalled carrots were sold in their Canadian locations, and the CFIA is working closely with retailers to ensure customer safety.
Commitment to Safety
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency remains committed to protecting public health and ensuring the safety of food products in Canada. Updates regarding this recall and further developments will be shared as the investigation continues.
