A Canadian citizen living in the United States for decades is facing federal charges after American authorities alleged he illegally voted in multiple U.S. elections while falsely claiming to be an American citizen.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, the 40-year-old man, who has reportedly lived in Saugus north of Boston, has been charged with unlawful voting by a non-citizen and casting ballots known to be fraudulent.
Federal prosecutors allege the accused became a permanent resident of the United States in February 1987 and later declared on official voter registration documents that he was a U.S. citizen. Authorities claim he subsequently participated in several federal elections despite not holding American citizenship.
If convicted, the accused could face prison sentences ranging from one to five years along with substantial financial penalties between $100,000 and $250,000 under U.S. federal law.
Court records indicate the man is expected to appear before a Massachusetts court in June as the case proceeds through the American legal system.
The case comes amid continued scrutiny in the United States over election integrity, voter registration procedures, and enforcement related to non-citizen voting laws.
