Hawaii’s Sunshine and Pressure Play Deliver Another Playoff Thriller
Nick Taylor’s journey to his fifth PGA TOUR title at the Sony Open in Hawaii was nothing short of remarkable. Starting the final day at Waialae Country Club 1-over par and trailing the leaders by five strokes, Taylor’s chances of victory seemed almost non-existent. Yet, the Canadian star once again demonstrated his flair for the dramatic, capturing the win in a playoff and cementing his reputation as a clutch performer.
“I’m a bit stunned it worked out this way,” Taylor admitted, sitting with a flower lei draped around his neck and the Sony Open trophy by his side.
Taylor’s chances of winning stood at just 0.4% when he teed off on the 18th hole in regulation, according to Data Golf. But a miraculous eagle chip from behind the green vaulted him into a tie at 16-under alongside Nico Echavarria, setting up a playoff.
The leaders, J.J. Spaun and Stephan Jaeger, faltered in the closing holes, opening the door for Taylor’s electrifying finish. Despite missing two short birdie putts on Nos. 15 and 16 earlier in the round, Taylor stayed composed when it mattered most.
The playoff saw both Taylor and Echavarria birdie the first extra hole. On the second playoff hole, Taylor hit a pinpoint pitch shot to within three feet of the pin, sealing the victory as Echavarria three-putted from 39 feet.
This win continues Taylor’s streak of playoff triumphs, adding to his victories at the 2023 RBC Canadian Open and last year’s WM Phoenix Open. “I just feel like I can rise to the occasion,” Taylor said, reflecting on his ability to deliver under pressure.
Taylor’s win is particularly impressive given his struggles over the past year. Following his WM Phoenix Open victory, he managed just one top-10 finish and failed to secure a spot on the Presidents Cup International Team in his native Canada—a disappointment that weighed heavily on him.
“It was a tough six, seven months,” Taylor shared. “I had only myself to blame.”
With this win, Taylor not only silenced his critics but also secured exemptions into major tournaments, including the Masters and the PGA Championship, and climbed to second place in the FedExCup standings.
Known for its tightly contested finishes, the Sony Open once again delivered drama. Fifteen players were within three shots of the lead entering the final round, and no one held more than a one-shot advantage on the back nine. Strong winds and challenging conditions at Waialae kept the leaderboard congested, setting the stage for Taylor’s stunning comeback.
Taylor’s ability to persevere under pressure and seize opportunities has set him apart. Despite missed chances and stiff competition, he stayed focused, relying on his sharp short game and mental toughness.
“For whatever reason, my mind gets clear in those situations,” Taylor explained. “I enjoy being in those moments.”
Nick Taylor’s latest triumph not only showcases his skill but also reaffirms his place among the PGA TOUR’s elite closers. With the Sony Open trophy in hand and a season of opportunities ahead, Taylor is poised for even greater success.
