Canada Issues Travel Advisories for Popular Tourist Destinations Amid Rising Safety Concerns

As of February 20, 2025, the Government of Canada has issued travel advisories for several popular tourist destinations, urging travelers to exercise a high degree of caution due to various safety and security concerns. These advisories are in place to inform Canadian travelers of potential risks and to encourage them to stay vigilant while abroad.

Mexico

Travelers are advised to exercise a high degree of caution in Mexico due to high levels of criminal activity and kidnapping. Recent violent clashes between rival armed groups have occurred in areas such as Culiacán and Mazatlán, including incidents where armed groups have stopped vehicles on major highways. While Mexican authorities have increased security in major tourist destinations, incidents of violent crime still occur in cities, popular tourist areas, and resorts. Innocent bystanders have been injured or killed in these incidents.

Brazil

In Brazil, high crime rates and regular incidents of gang-related violence in urban areas have prompted advisories for travelers to exercise a high degree of caution. Since early January 2025, clashes between military police and organized criminal factions in parts of Porto Velho have resulted in multiple deaths, significant property damage, and disruptions to public transportation. Robberies, often involving weapons, are common, with thieves targeting individuals displaying valuables such as cell phones and laptops. Mass robberies by groups of criminals have occurred in public places, including beaches, shopping centers, and restaurants.

Costa Rica

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, is frequent in Costa Rica, with tourists often targeted due to perceptions of wealth. Theft of passports is extremely common, especially during peak tourist seasons from November to May and July to August. Thieves often work in teams to distract victims and steal possessions. Common locations for these crimes include popular tourist areas, public transportation hubs, hotel lobbies, and restaurants.

Guatemala

Guatemala experiences high levels of violent crime, including homicides, with incidents occurring even in tourist destinations. Due to limited police resources, arrest and detention rates are low. Criminals often perceive foreigners as wealthy, making travelers targets for robbery, carjacking, armed assault, and sexual assault. Visitors have been attacked while visiting volcanoes and other tourist sites.

Jamaica

In Jamaica, violent crime, including armed robbery and murder, is a significant concern in large cities and tourist areas such as Kingston and Montego Bay. Despite increased police presence, the availability of firearms contributes to drug- and gang-related crimes. There is a risk of becoming a victim of crossfire in these areas. Tourists are also at risk of opportunistic crimes, including theft and robberies.

Travelers are encouraged to stay informed about the current situation in their intended destinations and to follow the advice provided by local authorities and the Government of Canada.
