As families prepare for overseas vacations this summer, the Government of Canada is urging travellers to review updated travel advisories for several popular tourist destinations. From natural disasters to crime and terrorism risks, the advisories aim to help Canadians make informed decisions before heading abroad.
The Travel Advice and Advisories platform, managed by Global Affairs Canada, provides real-time safety updates. Here are the key advisories affecting five destinations:
Mexico
- Risks: Violent crime, gang-related incidents, and Hurricane Erick
- Details: The hurricane made landfall in Oaxaca on June 19 and continues to threaten infrastructure and safety. Despite security measures in tourist zones, violent crime remains a concern, even in resorts and restaurants.
Cuba
- Risks: Severe shortages of food, water, medicine, and fuel
- Details: Travelling across the island is difficult due to fuel shortages and frequent disruptions to public services. Long lines and altercations at gas stations are common. Beginning July 1, 2025, electronic visas are mandatory unless flying directly from Canada.
Peru
- Risks: Crime, civil unrest, and strikes
- Details: A state of emergency remains in place in Lima and Callao through July 16, 2025. Demonstrations and travel disruptions are common, and security checks have increased. Tourist access to locations like Machu Picchu may be affected.
Sweden
- Risks: Terrorism and rising gang violence
- Details: Sweden is under an “elevated threat” (level 3) for terrorism. Recent gang violence has included shootings and bombings in public spaces. Though not directly targeting tourists, bystander risk remains a concern.
Denmark
- Risks: Terrorism
- Details: Denmark is on “significant” threat level (level 4) for terrorism. Large public gatherings and holiday events are seen as higher-risk periods. Petty theft is also common during peak tourist seasons.
Travellers are encouraged to:
- Monitor local news
- Stay aware of surroundings
- Register with the Government of Canada’s travel registry
- Have backup plans and updated travel insurance
