Canada Invests $72 Million in Satellite Constellation to Track Wildfires from Space

The Government of Canada has announced a $72 million investment in a new satellite constellation, WildFireSat, to enhance monitoring and response efforts for active forest fires across the country.

Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault made the announcement today at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) headquarters south of Montreal, highlighting the project’s significance in improving wildfire detection, tracking, and management.

“This investment represents a major step forward in how we respond to wildfires, using cutting-edge technology to enhance early detection and provide real-time data to emergency responders,” said Guilbeault.

The Ontario-based company, Spire Global Canada, has been awarded the contract to develop the WildFireSat constellation, which will consist of seven satellites set to enter orbit by 2029.

Equipped with advanced infrared sensors, the satellites will provide daily thermal imaging of active fires, allowing experts to:

  • Assess fire intensity
  • Track wildfire progression
  • Identify the most dangerous fires for prioritization

According to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), WildFireSat is the world’s first space-based system designed specifically for wildfire monitoring. The program is expected to significantly enhance Canada’s ability to respond to growing wildfire threats, which have been exacerbated by climate change and extreme weather conditions in recent years

Minister Guilbeault emphasized that climate change has led to longer and more intense wildfire seasons, making real-time data collection critical for protecting communities, wildlife, and ecosystems.

“Canada is leading the way in utilizing space technology for environmental protection. This mission will provide emergency teams with the data they need to better predict, prepare for, and respond to wildfires,” he added.

The project aligns with Canada’s broader climate action strategy, reinforcing its commitment to using innovation and technology to combat climate-related disasters.

As wildfire seasons become more severe, the WildFireSat mission is expected to revolutionize fire management and disaster response, ensuring Canada remains at the forefront of climate resilience and space-based environmental monitoring.
