Canada and Germany Forge New Energy Alliance in Critical Minerals Push

Canada is moving to deepen its energy relationship with Germany through a new critical minerals partnership that will see both countries jointly finance natural resource projects.

Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that minerals like nickel and cobalt—long underdeveloped in Canada—are essential for the future of clean energy and global supply chains. He pointed out that China and Russia currently dominate the critical minerals market, a trend Canada and Germany hope to challenge.

Alongside the minerals deal, Carney said the partnership extends to broader energy collaboration, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen development.

The announcement comes during Carney’s five-day tour of Europe, where he is set to meet with German business leaders later today. Earlier this morning, he met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss both economic cooperation and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The two leaders agreed that Ukraine must be at the table for any decisions concerning its future, underscoring a united stance on the conflict while strengthening ties on energy security
