The Center for Great Apes marked a special milestone this week with a touching tribute to one of its most iconic residents—Bubbles, the beloved chimpanzee once owned by music legend Michael Jackson.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, the sanctuary announced that Bubbles is celebrating both his 42nd birthday and his 20th anniversary at the sanctuary, which has been his home since 2005.
“Today, we’re celebrating 20 years since Bubbles arrived at the Center for Great Apes in 2005 – and since we don’t know his exact birthdate, we’re also celebrating his 42nd birthday today!” the post read.
Bubbles first captured the public’s imagination in the early 1980s after being adopted by Michael Jackson. He lived a life of luxury at the superstar’s Neverland Ranch, sleeping in a crib, dressing in designer outfits, and attending celebrity events. From sipping tea with dignitaries in Japan during Jackson’s ‘Bad’ tour, to walking red carpets and even appearing in music videos like The Way You Make Me Feel, Bubbles became a global celebrity in his own right.
As Bubbles matured, however, the challenges of keeping a fully grown chimpanzee as a pet became apparent. In the early 2000s, Jackson arranged for Bubbles to live with a trainer before ensuring his permanent relocation to the Center for Great Apes in Florida in 2005.
Now, two decades later, sanctuary staff say Bubbles is thriving.
“Bubbles has truly flourished at the sanctuary, enjoying the simple joys of being a chimpanzee – climbing, foraging, and spending time with his chimpanzee friends,” said Patti Ragan, Founder and Director of the Center for Great Apes.
Known for his gentle demeanor and love of enrichment activities, Bubbles spends his days lounging under the Florida sun, painting, and relaxing in his favorite quiet spots. His artwork, which is sometimes shared by the sanctuary, is a reflection of his curious and expressive nature.
“He’s a dignified and gentle presence in his group,” the Center noted. “We’re so proud to provide Bubbles with a peaceful, enriching environment where he can simply be a chimpanzee.”
The sanctuary also expressed its gratitude to Michael Jackson’s estate, which continues to support Bubbles’ lifelong care.
Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50, ensured that Bubbles would be cared for with dignity and comfort. His lasting legacy includes not just his music, but his deep affection for animals and his efforts to provide them with safe havens.
As fans around the world remember both Jackson and his legendary companion, the story of Bubbles is now one of resilience, healing, and peace.
