MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Brooke Henderson gave Canadian golf fans a day to remember, capturing her second CPKC Women’s Open title on Sunday with a dramatic one-stroke victory over Minjee Lee. The win at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club marked Henderson’s first LPGA Tour triumph in more than two and a half years and the 14th of her career.
The 27-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ontario, closed with a composed 4-under 68 to finish at 15-under 269. Playing alongside world No. 4 Lee, Henderson seized the lead with a clutch 6-foot birdie putt on the par-3 14th, then responded to Lee’s 13-foot birdie on the 17th by sinking her own 12-footer to stay in front.
The victory added to Henderson’s 2018 Women’s Open title in Saskatchewan and reaffirmed her status as Canada’s brightest golf star. “To do this at home, in front of these amazing fans, means the world,” Henderson said as the crowd roared its approval.
Lee, already a major winner this season at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, settled for second after also carding a 68. Japan’s Mao Saigo surged into third at 11 under with a sparkling 66, while her compatriot Akie Iwai, who led after the opening two rounds, slipped to fourth at 10 under following a 69.
The week also highlighted rising Canadian talent, with 15-year-old amateur Aphrodite Deng making waves early by sharing second place after a blistering opening 66. She eventually tied for 20th at 4 under following a closing 73.
For Henderson, the win was more than just another trophy. It was a homecoming triumph, an emotional breakthrough, and proof that one of golf’s most beloved figures still has plenty of magic left.
