Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford has announced plans to construct a 401 Tunnel Expressway as part of a $1.5-billion infrastructure initiative, contingent on his party’s re-election.
Ford says the project aims to reduce gridlock, enhance economic competitiveness, and generate new jobs.
“The Highway 401 Tunnel Expressway will include both vehicle and transit lanes and will extend beyond Brampton and Mississauga in the west to beyond Markham and Scarborough in the east. It will be one of the largest, most ambitious infrastructure projects in the world,” Ford stated.
The proposed tunnel expressway is positioned as a transformative project to improve traffic flow along one of North America’s busiest highways, though details regarding funding, environmental impact, and construction timelines have yet to be outlined.
