Brampton’s Population Surges by 90,000 in a Year, Nearing One Million Milestone

Brampton’s population is skyrocketing, with new data revealing a significant jump of nearly 90,000 residents in a single year. The city’s population grew from 656,480 in 2021 to 745,557 in 2022, representing a remarkable 13.6% increase.

Although Brampton’s 2025 budget projects the city will hit the one-million mark by 2051, external sources suggest a much earlier timeline. According to World Population Review, Brampton’s population stood at 826,998 as of 2024, with current growth trends indicating the milestone could be reached well before official estimates.

Already recognized as Canada’s fastest-growing large city, Brampton now ranks as the ninth most populous city in the country.

Mayor Patrick Brown previously highlighted Brampton’s unparalleled growth, noting that the city’s expansion rate is four times faster than the national average and five times that of Ontario. Premier Doug Ford has echoed this sentiment, predicting Brampton could soon surpass Mississauga and Ottawa in population, making it Ontario’s second-largest city after Toronto. Currently, Brampton is the province’s fourth-largest municipality.

Brampton’s rapid growth reflects its cultural diversity and global appeal:

  • Residents represent 250 different cultures.
  • 171 languages are spoken across the city.
  • Over 52.9% of residents were born outside Canada, showcasing its status as a top destination for newcomers.
  • The average age of Brampton’s population is 37.5, indicating a relatively young and dynamic demographic.

The city’s explosive population growth brings both opportunities and challenges. Infrastructure, housing, and services must expand to meet the demands of a growing population. However, Brampton’s multicultural fabric and economic potential position it as a key player in shaping Ontario’s future.

As Brampton approaches the one-million mark, its status as a vibrant, diverse, and rapidly evolving city continues to capture national attention.
