Brampton Warns Residents: Labour Day Fireworks Could Cost You $100K Fine

Residents in Brampton are being reminded that fireworks are strictly prohibited this Labour Day, with violators facing fines of up to $100,000 under the city’s fireworks bylaw.

Until 2022, Labour Day was one of the few holidays where residents could set off fireworks without a permit. But following a surge in complaints and safety concerns, Brampton introduced a sweeping ban on all personal fireworks, allowing only sparklers.

The bylaw makes it illegal to use, sell, display, purchase, distribute, or even possess fireworks or explosives within city limits. Offenders face a minimum $500 fine for discharging fireworks and $1,000 for selling them, with penalties reaching six figures for serious violations.

The city also confirmed there will be no city-sponsored fireworks displays on Labour Day. Unlike Canada Day, New Year’s Eve, or Diwali, the holiday will pass without official pyrotechnic celebrations.

Brampton Fire and Emergency Services said the ban has reduced fireworks-related complaints since 2022, when nearly 1,500 calls were logged, more than 1,000 of them during Diwali. That year, officials issued $38,500 in fines and responded to 20 fireworks-related fires costing taxpayers about $20,000.
