Brampton has paid tribute to one of its most revered residents, the late former Ontario premier Bill Davis, with a memorial sculpture unveiled on July 30—what would have been his 95th birthday. The installation, created by artists Xiaojing Yan and Lilly Otasevic, stands prominently on the grounds of the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives, near the corner of Main Street North and Wellington Street, within sight of Davis’s former home. One side of the three-dimensional work features the words “educate” and “inspire,” while the other reveals a silhouette of Davis’s profile when viewed from a specific angle.
The unveiling ceremony drew a large crowd, including Premier Doug Ford, Peel Region Chair Nando Iannicca, Mayor Patrick Brown, former Toronto mayor John Tory, and veteran broadcaster Steve Paikin. Ford praised Davis as “the greatest premier anyone can imagine,” lauding his leadership, bipartisan cooperation, and enduring contributions during his 14 years as premier from 1971 to 1985. Neil Davis, speaking on behalf of the family, said he hoped the monument would not only highlight his father’s accomplishments but also inspire future leaders to act with civility, respect, humility, and truthfulness.
Mayor Brown, who considered Davis a mentor, described the monument as a fitting tribute to a leader who shaped key provincial initiatives, including the Charter of Rights, labour laws, and the Ministry of the Environment. He noted that while Davis left his mark on the country, his deepest connection remained with Brampton, where he spent all 92 years of his life. John Tory remembered Davis’s humility, decency, and unwavering love for his hometown, while keynote speaker Steve Paikin, who authored a biography of the former premier, called him the best premier he had ever known.
Davis, who was given the keys to the city in 2019, is remembered not only for his political achievements but also for his personal integrity and deep commitment to public service. The monument now stands as a lasting reminder of his legacy in the heart of the city he cherished.
