Brampton has officially launched its first-ever Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy, a comprehensive two-year plan endorsed by City Council. This proactive initiative aims to dismantle systemic barriers, strengthen inclusion, and advance equity both within the municipal organization and across the broader Brampton community.
The EDI Strategy 2025–2026 serves as a roadmap for meaningful and measurable change, developed through collaborative efforts across various city departments and informed by staff feedback. It aligns with Brampton’s 2024 Corporate Strategic Plan and the “Brampton 2040 Vision: Living the Mosaic,” and is built upon four core pillars:
- Diverse and Equitable Workforce: Focusing on internal workplace culture and leadership development.
- Community Engagement: Strengthening partnerships with community groups.
- Foster and Create a Culture of Belonging: Embedding inclusion at all organizational levels.
- Identify and Address Systemic Barriers: Proactively working to remove obstacles to equity.
In conjunction with the new strategy, the City has also released an Equity Office Progress Report. This report highlights accomplishments from the past four years since the Equity Office was established in 2020. Since its inception, the office has spearheaded initiatives in community outreach, public education, and organizational change, laying the groundwork for the strategic priorities outlined in the new EDI Strategy.
Mayor Patrick Brown emphasized that the strategy reflects Brampton’s ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive city, ensuring that every individual is treated with dignity and respect. Councillor Navjit Kaur Brar, Chair of the Corporate Services Section, added that the strategy aims to build a stronger, more connected city where all residents have the opportunity to thrive, by addressing barriers and creating more inclusive spaces.
