Brampton Unveils ‘Canada First’ Buying Strategy to Counter U.S. Tariff Threats

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, alongside City Council members, introduced a bold ‘Made in Canada’ purchasing strategy today, signaling strong backing for homegrown businesses amid looming U.S. tariffs.

Under this new approach, the City will examine existing contracts to identify legal options for terminating deals with American firms and their affiliates. Going forward, Brampton’s updated Purchasing Bylaw will block U.S.-based companies and their subsidiaries from bidding on city contracts for as long as U.S. tariffs remain in place.

The City also rolled out a campaign website to rally municipalities nationwide behind a ‘Canada First’ purchasing model and drum up public backing. Brampton is doubling down on bolstering its local economy and championing Canadian industries, taking a preemptive swing at potential trade challenges.
