Consular Camp for Indian-Origin Community Suspended Amid Safety Concerns
The Brampton Triveni Mandir and Community Centre in Canada has canceled a planned Life Certificate Event, originally scheduled for November 17, due to warnings of potential violent protests. This consular camp was meant to assist Indian-origin Hindus and Sikhs in renewing essential life certificates.
In a statement released on Monday, the temple administration announced that the cancellation was prompted by intelligence from Peel Regional Police indicating an “Extremely High and Imminent Threat Level” of protests. The administration apologized to the community, expressing disappointment over safety concerns impacting attendees’ ability to visit Hindu temples in Canada. They also urged Peel Police to take action against these threats to ensure security for the Hindu community and the public.
The cancellation follows a recent incident on November 3, where an Indian consular camp at the nearby Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton experienced violent disruptions, drawing criticism in both Canada and India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the incident, describing it as a “deliberate attack” on the temple and a “cowardly attempt” to intimidate Indian diplomats, and called for Canadian authorities to uphold the rule of law.
This latest event underscores ongoing tensions between Canada and India, which have heightened in recent months amid diplomatic disputes.
