An 18-year-old Brampton woman has been charged in connection with a daylight carjacking in Mississauga that was captured on a viral security camera video. The incident, which took place on September 6, left a man injured after he was struck by his own vehicle.
The suspect, Sarah Badshaw, turned herself in to Peel Regional Police on Thursday following a public appeal for information. The carjacking occurred around 2 p.m. near Winston Churchill Boulevard and Eglinton Avenue when Badshaw responded to an Auto Trader ad for a Porsche. The victim allowed her to check the vehicle, at which point she claimed to be waiting for her father.
Footage from a security camera shows the woman reversing the Porsche, striking the victim, who was knocked down and appeared to be run over. The video quickly spread online, amassing over 79,000 views on Peel Regional Police’s social media platforms.
Police launched an investigation, seeking help from the public to identify the suspect and two other vehicles believed to be used by accomplices. Thanks to numerous tips from residents, Badshaw was identified and subsequently charged.
In addition to the hit-and-run, Badshaw has been linked to several fraud investigations in the Peel Region. She was also driving without a valid license at the time of the incident. The charges against her include dangerous operation causing bodily harm, theft of a motor vehicle, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, and driving without a license.
Peel police expressed their gratitude for the community’s involvement in helping solve the case. “This type of community support is invaluable to us, and as you can see, it yields tremendous results,” said Constable Tyler Bell-Morena in a video update.
Badshaw, a student in Brampton, had an online babysitting profile that has since gained attention. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
