Brampton Secures Funding for Long-Awaited Riverwalk Flood Mitigation Project

Brampton is set to kick off construction of the long-awaited Riverwalk project, a major flood mitigation initiative designed to protect downtown from severe flooding, including extreme storm events similar to Hurricane Hazel.

Mayor Patrick Brown announced that the Riverwalk project will soon break ground, marking a significant step toward safeguarding Brampton’s urban core from flood damage. To keep residents informed, the city will host a public information session on:

📅 Date: Tuesday, February 25, 2025
📍 Location: Conservatory at Brampton City Hall
Time: 6:30 – 8:00 PM

The Etobicoke Creek floodplain runs through downtown Brampton, placing parts of the city at high risk of flooding. Provincial restrictions limit development and investment in flood-prone areas, making flood mitigation a top priority for city planners.

“The Riverwalk project is an innovative solution to mitigate flood risks in downtown Brampton while fostering sustainable urban growth, attracting investment, and enhancing the public realm,” the city stated in a release.

Developed with support from AECOM, a global infrastructure consulting firm, the Riverwalk project will:

  • Protect downtown Brampton from future floods, including severe weather events.
  • Remove provincial floodplain restrictions, allowing for increased development and investment in the area.
  • Improve environmental sustainability and urban resilience.

Originally approved over a decade ago, the Riverwalk project faced repeated delays due to challenges in securing federal and provincial funding.

During his State of the City address on February 4, Mayor Brown confirmed that the necessary funding is now in place, setting the project’s estimated completion date for 2028.

“This is a transformative project for Brampton,” Brown said. “Riverwalk will not only protect our downtown from flooding, but it will unlock opportunities for smart, sustainable growth.”

With construction about to begin, Brampton residents are encouraged to attend the public information session to learn more about the project and how it will shape the city’s future.
