As the Labour Day long weekend approaches, the City of Brampton is reminding residents to celebrate responsibly by adhering to the city’s strict fireworks ban. Violating the ban could result in fines of up to $100,000.
Previously, Labour Day was one of the few holidays where fireworks were permitted without a city-issued permit. However, following a record number of complaints in 2022, Brampton introduced comprehensive restrictions on the use of personal fireworks.
This year marks the second Labour Day under the new regulations, which prohibit the use, sale, display, purchase, distribution, and possession of all fireworks and explosives within city limits. The only exception to the ban is the use of sparklers.
Fines for violating these regulations are severe: discharging fireworks can result in a minimum penalty of $500, while selling them could lead to a $1,000 fine. Under the new bylaw, penalties can reach up to $100,000 for serious offenses.
Brampton’s crackdown on fireworks began in response to the 2022 Diwali celebrations, which generated over 1,000 complaints and led to thousands of dollars in fines during New Year’s Eve enforcement. The city is also hiring additional bylaw enforcement officers and support staff to manage the increased volume of service requests and address a backlog of bylaw complaints.
In 2022 alone, the city issued $38,500 in fireworks-related fines, and Brampton Fire and Emergency Services responded to 20 fireworks-related incidents, costing taxpayers approximately $20,000.
Residents are encouraged to avoid using fireworks this Labour Day to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration for everyone in the community.
