Mayor Brown Eliminates Rental Fees, Cracks Down on Unsafe Housing
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown has issued a stern warning to landlords neglecting safety regulations: comply with building and fire codes or leave the city. At a press conference on February 20, 2025, Mayor Brown announced the elimination of Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) fees to encourage more landlords to register their properties.
The RRL program, initiated last year, addresses the proliferation of unregulated rooming houses with unsafe living conditions. Since June, Brampton has hired 38 additional bylaw enforcement officers, resulting in $121,000 in fines in 2024 for non-compliant landlords.
Mayor Brown emphasized that landlords unwilling to adhere to safety standards are not welcome in Brampton, stating, “If you want to have a firetrap risking the safety of our residents, then go somewhere else.”
