The Beer Store is continuing its wave of closures across Ontario, announcing that seven more locations will shut their doors permanently on November 16. This comes just days after 10 other stores closed and ahead of additional shutdowns planned for September 28, October 19, and November 2.
Among the latest locations to be shuttered is the Beer Store at 374 Main Street North in Brampton. Other closures will affect stores in Alexandria, Barrie, Beaverton, Cornwall, Gananoque, and South River.
The company says the closures are part of its transition to a new alcohol retail marketplace in Ontario, which expanded last year to allow thousands of convenience stores and more grocery outlets to sell beer, cider, and wine.
“Selling beer and collecting empties in Ontario is changing as part of marketplace expansion,” said Ozzie Ahmed, vice president of retail at The Beer Store. “We know this is difficult news for consumers, recyclers and our employees.”
Under its agreement with the provincial government, The Beer Store will keep at least 300 locations open until the end of 2025, with the province committing up to $225 million to help the company transition, maintain jobs, and ensure continued recycling services. Starting January 1, all grocery stores that sell alcohol will be required to accept bottle returns and refund deposits.
