Brampton’s council has given the green light to establish a fresh women’s advisory committee and is actively seeking community-minded women to join.
This committee will comprise ten local women and female-identifying individuals, including representatives from businesses, along with two council members. Applications are open until May 31, with the inaugural meeting scheduled for October.
“The creation of the Brampton Women’s Advisory Committee underscores the City’s dedication to fostering gender inclusivity in municipal affairs, providing a platform for women to influence local governance,” stated an official release.
Councillors Rowena Santos (representing Wards 1 and 5) and Navjit Kaur Brar (representing Wards 2 and 6) championed this initiative, presenting a successful motion at the council’s February 28 session, in honor of International Women’s Day.
Currently, Brar and Santos are the only female members among the eleven elected councilors in Brampton. During the meeting, they shared personal experiences and addressed gender-specific challenges they encounter in their roles, including instances of misogyny, harassment, and threats via emails and social media.
“Committee members will have a unique platform to engage in dialogues addressing socioeconomic, political, and cultural barriers affecting women in Brampton. Their involvement will significantly shape public policy,” the city emphasized.
“Brampton believes gender parity and inclusivity are indispensable for a thriving community. Through a gender-inclusive approach, the committee aims to foster an environment that celebrates equity, diversity, and inclusivity.”
