Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) has introduced the Next Generation 911 (NG911) system, a major upgrade designed to enhance emergency response capabilities, improve accessibility, and strengthen public safety. This modernized system will provide emergency responders with more accurate caller information, faster response times, and increased reliability while paving the way for future text, photo, and video communication between residents and 911 operators.
The Joint Fire Communication Centre (JFCC)—which handles emergency calls and fire dispatch services for Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon—is now the third fire 911 centre in Ontario to implement NG911, reinforcing Brampton’s leadership in emergency response innovation.
NG911 replaces the existing 911 infrastructure with an advanced, more resilient system that enhances emergency response through:
More accurate caller data – Dispatchers receive precise location and phone number details for faster response.
Reduced wait times – Calls connect to emergency responders more quickly.
Enhanced system reliability – A robust and secure network ensures uninterrupted emergency service.
Improved backup capabilities – Stronger fail-safe measures keep the system operational during outages.
More efficient emergency response – Better coordination allows first responders to arrive faster.
Future enhancements – Upcoming features will enable residents to send text messages, photos, and videos directly to 911, improving situational awareness for emergency crews.
This transition aligns with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s (CRTC) mandate for all emergency services to adopt NG911 by 2027.
Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton:
“The safety of our residents is our top priority, and the launch of Next Generation 911 is a major step in modernizing emergency response. This advanced system gives first responders the tools they need to act on critical information faster than ever before.”
Rowena Santos, Regional Councillor, Wards 1 & 5; Chair, Community Services:
“With capabilities like text and multimedia communication, NG911 makes emergency services more accessible—especially for individuals with disabilities. This ensures that all members of our community can reach help when they need it most.”
Nick Ruller, Fire Chief, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services:
“Next Generation 911 transforms how we respond to emergencies. With real-time information sharing, our firefighters and emergency operators can assess situations quickly and provide life-saving assistance. We have been rigorously preparing for this transition to ensure a smooth implementation.”
The public will continue to dial 911 for emergencies as usual, now with the added benefit of enhanced communication options that improve response times and public safety.
