Brampton Adopts Advanced Technology to Improve Hip Replacement Surgeries

Hip replacement patients in Brampton are expected to face fewer complications thanks to an innovative made-in-Ontario technology, as announced by the William Osler Health System.

William Osler Health System, which operates Brampton Civic Hospital and Etobicoke General, has partnered with Kitchener-based Intellijoint Surgical to introduce a state-of-the-art computer-assisted system for total hip replacement surgeries. This new technology, known as Intellijoint HIP, is designed to enhance surgical outcomes significantly.

The Intellijoint HIP system, controlled by surgeons, has been proven to reduce leg length discrepancies, prevent hip dislocations, and decrease the need for revision surgeries. Additionally, it optimizes hospital efficiency by eliminating the necessity for intraoperative x-rays, thereby shortening the duration of each surgery.

The system employs a miniature camera and a software-encoded laptop and is compatible with all major implants. Osler emphasizes that this technology integrates smoothly into a surgeon’s existing workflow without extending the time required for room turnover or sterilization processes.

According to Intellijoint Surgical, the technology does not significantly add to surgery time and has a minimal learning curve, typically requiring five cases or fewer to master.

Dr. Roberta Minna, Chief of Surgery and Co-Medical Director at Osler, expressed excitement about the new technology, stating, “Integrating the Intellijoint HIP into our surgical practice allows our surgeons to be as precise and efficient as possible, leading to improved outcomes for both patients and the hospital.”

Potential hip replacement patients are assessed at Osler’s Rapid Access Clinic, which may recommend either surgical or non-surgical treatment options.
