Brampton Accelerates Toward a Greener Future: $183 Million Investment Secures 136 New Transit Buses to Power City’s Growth

BRAMPTON – The City of Brampton is driving forward its commitment to building a connected, sustainable, and inclusive transit network with the purchase of up to 136 new buses for Brampton Transit. The initiative, supported by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario, represents an investment of over $183 million aimed at expanding service capacity, improving the rider experience, and meeting the needs of one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities.

The announcement took place in Brampton, where Mayor Patrick Brown was joined by a delegation of federal and provincial representatives, including The Honourable Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation and MPP for Brampton South; The Honourable Shafqat Ali, MP for Brampton—Chinguacousy Park; The Honourable Sonia Sidhu, MP for Brampton South; The Honourable Amandeep Sodhi, MP for Brampton Centre; The Honourable Charmaine Williams, MPP for Brampton Centre; The Honourable Graham McGregor, MPP for Brampton North; and Amarjot Sandhu, MPP for Brampton West.

As Brampton continues to experience record-breaking ridership growth, the expansion of Brampton Transit’s fleet will strengthen public transportation, reduce congestion, and connect residents and businesses to new opportunities.

The fleet additions will include a mix of 60-foot articulated diesel buses, 40-foot diesel-hybrid buses, 40-foot conventional diesel buses, as well as zero-emission battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric buses. This diverse range of vehicles will boost service reliability, expand capacity, and accelerate Brampton’s transition to clean energy technologies, advancing the city’s Environmental Master Plan.

Funding for the project includes $48.8 million from the City of Brampton, $73.2 million from the Government of Canada, and $61 million from the Government of Ontario through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

These investments reinforce Brampton’s broader vision of sustainable, transit-oriented growth, while also generating new jobs, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and providing affordable, reliable transportation for residents accessing work, school, health care, and community services.
