Booklovers Unite: Canada’s Biggest Literary Festival Returns to Toronto This Weekend

Toronto’s literary scene will come alive this weekend as The Word on the Street festival makes its highly anticipated return for the 36th year. The free celebration of books, magazines, and storytelling will take over David Pecaut Square on September 27 and 28, drawing thousands of readers, writers, and publishers to the heart of the city.

This year’s program offers something for everyone: author readings and signings, writing workshops, children’s activities, and a bustling vendor marketplace. Aspiring writers will also find opportunities to sharpen their craft through poetry workshops, magazine pitch sessions, and speed mentoring with professional editors.

Launched in 1990 by the Book and Periodical Council’s Promotions Committee, The Word on the Street has grown into Canada’s largest literary festival, drawing more than 200,000 visitors annually. Past editions have taken place along Queen Street West, at Queen’s Park, and at Harbourfront Centre, but this year the festivities will fill David Pecaut Square at 215 King Street West.

Booklovers can dive into the action from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Organizers promise a weekend that celebrates not just the joy of reading, but also the strength of Canada’s literary community.
