City Reminds Residents to Follow Winter Parking and Snow Removal Rules
With snow in the forecast, the City of Brampton is urging residents to prepare for winter and avoid obstructing snow-clearing operations. Blocking snow plows or failing to follow snow-related bylaws could lead to hefty fines of up to $500 per infraction.
Snow Removal Operations and Priorities
Brampton’s snow removal crews have already begun de-icing operations and will start plowing when snow accumulates 5 cm or more. The city prioritizes clearing major roadways for maximum safety before addressing local streets, covering:
- 4,100 km of roads
- 1,400 km of sidewalks
- 224 km of trails
Parking Restrictions During Winter Weather
To ensure safe passage for plows, salters, and emergency vehicles, Brampton enforces a ban on street parking during snow events. Penalties for violating these rules include:
- $125 fine for a first offence
- $250 fine for a second offence
- $500 fine for subsequent offences
Tips to Avoid Fines and Support Snow Removal
Residents can help snow-clearing operations run smoothly by:
- Clearing snow and ice from sidewalks by 11 a.m. the day after snowfall.
- Keeping fire hydrants on their property free from snow for emergency access.
- Avoiding shoveling snow onto roadways, as it poses safety risks and can block drainage.
- Refraining from street parking until roads have been salted or plowed. Parking permits are suspended during snow events.
Snow Clearing Assistance Program
Brampton offers a Snow Clearing Assistance Fund for eligible residents, including seniors, people with disabilities, and renters. Grants are available to offset the cost of snow removal:
- Up to $300 for renters
- Up to $400 for corner lot properties
Real-Time Snow Plow Tracking
Residents can monitor snow plow progress using Brampton’s real-time tracking map, ensuring they stay informed about road conditions and operations.
City’s Message
“We urge residents to prepare for winter weather and stay informed about our operations,” said Shane Loftus, Director of Road Maintenance, Operations and Fleet.
By following these guidelines, residents can avoid fines and help ensure Brampton’s streets and sidewalks are safe and accessible for everyone during the winter season.
