The Black Actors Film Guild Canada (BAFGC) hosted its annual Canadian Black Screen Awards at Brampton City Hall yesterday, celebrating Black excellence across cinema, television, music, fashion, media, and the performing arts. The prestigious event recognized outstanding individuals and organizations making a significant impact in the community and beyond.

Rowena Santos, Brampton City Councillor, attended the red carpet event before heading to the National Flag Day ceremonies. In a statement shared on her Facebook page, Santos congratulated the BAFGC and all award winners, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and uplifting Black talent in Canada’s creative industries.

“Congratulations to the Black Actors Film Guild Canada on an incredible evening celebrating Black excellence at the Canadian Black Screen Awards,” Santos wrote. “It was an honour to stop by the red carpet and witness the incredible talent and achievements of our community. These awards not only highlight the contributions of Black artists and creators but also inspire future generations to pursue their dreams.”

Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South, also praised the event and its impact on the community. “The Canadian Black Screen Awards are a testament to the incredible talent and resilience of Black artists and creators in Canada,” Sidhu said. “By celebrating their achievements, we not only honour their contributions to our cultural landscape but also pave the way for greater diversity and inclusion in the arts. Congratulations to all the winners and the Black Actors Film Guild Canada for organizing such a meaningful event.”

The Canadian Black Screen Awards, now in its fifth year, has become a cornerstone event for celebrating diversity and inclusion in the arts. This year’s ceremony featured a star-studded red carpet, captivating performances, and heartfelt acceptance speeches from winners across various categories. The event also served as a platform to amplify the voices of Black creators and advocate for greater representation in Canada’s entertainment industry.

The BAFGC, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting Black talent in film and television, has been instrumental in fostering opportunities for Black artists in Canada. Through initiatives like the Canadian Black Screen Awards, the guild continues to break barriers and create spaces for Black excellence to thrive.
