As Brampton residents enjoy the summer sunshine and outdoor gatherings, the City is reminding everyone that strong communities start with good neighbours. That means keeping noise to a minimum and practicing responsible pet care.
The City’s Noise and Public Nuisance By-laws are in place to maintain peace and comfort throughout Brampton’s neighbourhoods. Whether it’s a backyard party, construction work, or a revving engine, excessive noise can quickly become more than just an inconvenience—it can affect the quality of life for others.
To keep things harmonious, residents are reminded that power tools and construction equipment aren’t permitted in residential areas between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. (or until 9:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays). The same goes for lawnmowers, sanders, and other outdoor equipment. Vehicle noise also falls under these rules: modified mufflers and revving engines could lead to fines if they cross the 92-decibel limit—roughly the sound of a hair dryer at full blast.
When it comes to hosting get-togethers, Brampton encourages residents to be mindful of loud music and to wrap things up respectfully, especially late in the evening. Those found violating the by-law may face penalties.
Pet owners also have a key role to play in keeping neighbourhoods peaceful. Dogs are allowed to bark, but constant or loud barking—often due to boredom or lack of exercise—can disrupt entire blocks. To help reduce excessive barking, the City recommends ensuring dogs get enough activity, aren’t left alone too long, and are rewarded for calm behaviour.
Respecting others includes how we interact with dogs in public. Before petting any dog, residents are urged to ask the owner’s permission—some dogs may be nervous, in training, or working. Always read a dog’s body language, stay calm, and handle dogs gently.
Brampton Animal Services is here to help with everything from dog behaviour education to wildlife concerns. Residents can reach out to 905-458-5800 or visit brampton.ca/animalservices.
