An American man is in custody after allegedly attempting to cross into Canada illegally by kayak in the early hours of Wednesday morning, according to LaSalle police.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. in the west end of LaSalle, Ontario, as a police officer was conducting routine checks of commercial properties near the Detroit River. While inspecting the rear of a business, the officer spotted a man on the shoreline with two backpacks and a kayak.
Police allege the 51-year-old U.S. citizen had used the kayak to cross the river in an unauthorized effort to enter Canada. He was immediately detained at the scene.
The man was later handed over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), who are now conducting a full investigation into the attempted border crossing.
