Abu Dhabi’s BAPS Hindu Mandir Welcomes 2.2 Million Visitors in Its First Year

Temple marks milestone with grand celebrations, prayers, and cultural festivities

The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, the first hand-carved traditional stone and marble temple in the UAE, has recorded an astounding 2.2 million visitors in its inaugural year since opening in February 2024.

To mark the milestone, more than 10,000 devotees and volunteers gathered before dawn on Sunday, offering prayers and participating in a day-long cultural celebration.

Described as a “beacon of unity”, the temple has drawn praise for fostering greater cultural and interfaith understanding.

“The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi has exceeded all expectations in its first year, becoming a cultural and spiritual landmark,” said Swami Brahmaviharidas, head of international relations for BAPS.

He expressed gratitude to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed for his support, highlighting how the temple reflects the nation’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and religious harmony.

Families gathered as early as 4 AM to take part in rituals, prayers, music, and dance performances.

“One year is a milestone for us because it’s overwhelming to have the first traditional temple of the Middle East in Abu Dhabi,” said Meera Chokshi, 33, a Dubai resident. “Before the temple was built, something felt missing. Now, we visit every weekend to offer prayers with family—it gives us hope.”

The celebrations continued into the evening, featuring traditional Indian dances and devotional hymns, set against the temple’s stunning sandstone backdrop.

Built at a cost of Dh350 million, the temple stands as an architectural wonder, with intricate carvings inspired by ancient Indian scriptures, crafted by 2,000 sculptors. Despite challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, construction continued, culminating in a spiritual and cultural hub open to all visitors.
