Ontario Provincial Police are renewing their appeal for information in the 2021 murder of Giovanni (John) Costa, releasing new video footage of two suspects and reissuing a $50,000 reward for tips leading to their arrest and conviction.
Costa, 65, was shot and killed shortly after midnight on January 18, 2021, during a violent home invasion on Harvest Moon Drive in Bolton, just north of Brampton. Police say two masked suspects forced their way into the home, where Costa and his adult son, Michael, were both shot. Giovanni died at the scene, while his son survived.
Surveillance footage released by police shows an older black BMW 3-series sedan driving past the Costa home before two masked suspects approach the residence. The video later shows the suspects fleeing the scene on foot. Investigators hope the public can help identify the individuals captured on camera.
The shooting came just months after Michael Costa survived another targeted attack outside a Vaughan café in November 2020. According to court documents, Michael had connections to slain gangster Alex Kucovic, who was killed in 2011, and believed there was a “hit on his head.” Police have not confirmed whether the attackers were targeting Giovanni, his son, or both.
“Regardless of the motive, we see Mr. Costa as an innocent victim, and we want to locate the persons responsible for his murder,” OPP Det. Insp. Kurtis Fredericks previously said.
In 2022, police arrested Jordan Andall, 20, of Scarborough, and charged him with accessory after the fact to murder. However, the two primary suspects remain at large. “While one individual was arrested, efforts continue to locate two others captured in the released video,” OPP Det. Insp. Steven Martell said. “A $50,000 reward remains available, and we urge anyone with further information to come forward and help bring answers to Giovanni’s family.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
