Brampton is one step closer to getting its long-awaited second hospital, as the Ontario government and William Osler Health System (Osler) have officially selected Bird Design-Build Construction Inc. to lead the next phase of the Peel Memorial Hospital expansion project.
The announcement, made on October 27, marks a major milestone in transforming the Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness into a full-service hospital — complete with a multi-storey patient tower, a 24/7 emergency department, and expanded specialty clinics.
Development Agreement Signed
Osler and Infrastructure Ontario have signed a Development Phase Agreement (DPA) with Bird Design-Build Construction. The agreement includes detailed design plans, a target construction price, and a timeline for completion. Once finalized, a Project Agreement will follow, allowing construction to move ahead.
Preliminary site work — including access improvements and early preparation — began in March 2025.
Osler Foundation President and CEO Ken Mayhew said Bird Design-Build will now take the vision “from concept to reality.” The design phase will last several months, and construction is expected to begin as early as late 2026 or early 2027, with an estimated four-year build timeline.
“It can’t come soon enough,” said Mayhew. “We have a lot of pressures in terms of clinical volumes at Brampton Civic Hospital.”
$200 Million ‘Boldest Capital Campaign’ in Peel Region
Alongside the development deal, Osler Foundation has launched what Mayhew calls the “boldest capital campaign in Peel region’s history.”
The goal: $200 million to cover 10 per cent of the hospital’s construction cost and 100 per cent of the equipment inside the facility — a requirement for all Ontario hospitals under the “local share” model.
Mayhew emphasized that community participation is vital to the campaign’s success:
“From kids running lemonade stands to major fundraising galas, every dollar will bring us closer to building a hospital that Brampton deserves.”
Next 100 Gala to Kickstart Fundraising
The campaign’s first major event, the Next 100 Gala Benefit Concert, will take place on November 22 at The Rose Brampton Theatre. The concert celebrates Peel Memorial’s 100th anniversary and will feature 1980s icons Men Without Hats and A Flock of Seagulls.
Mayhew said donations are already coming in from enthusiastic community members.
A Hospital Brampton Urgently Needs
Brampton, one of Canada’s fastest-growing and most diverse cities, has long faced critical healthcare shortages and overcapacity at Brampton Civic Hospital. The expansion of Peel Memorial is expected to significantly ease those pressures and ensure residents have access to timely, high-quality care close to home.
“Once Peel Memorial opens, it’s going to help ease some of the capacity challenges faced by Osler and by the citizens of Brampton,” Mayhew said. “That’s why it can’t happen soon enough.”
