“Will bolster the sport and recreation sector” Says Amarjot Sandhu MPP
The Ontario government announced a significant investment of up to $200 million over the next three years to enhance and expand sports and recreation facilities across the province. This initiative, revealed as part of the 2024 Budget titled “Building a Better Ontario,” aims to support the growing needs of Ontario communities.
Premier Doug Ford highlighted that the new Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund is designed to revitalize existing facilities and construct new ones to meet the demands of Ontario’s expanding population. “Our government is committed to ensuring that families in Ontario have modern, accessible places to play and stay active as our communities continue to grow,” said Premier Ford.
The funding will be allocated through two main streams:
- Repairing and upgrading current sports and recreation facilities to make them more accessible and better suited to the needs of the community.
- Constructing new facilities, including replacing those that are beyond repair and at the end of their lifespan.
Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, Neil Lumsden, noted, “These new and improved facilities will not only serve as vital community hubs but will also enable us to host more provincial, national, and international sporting events, which will bring jobs and tourists to our communities.”
Applications for the funding will open to municipalities, Indigenous communities, and non-profit organizations, with more detailed guidelines expected to be released in Summer 2024.
Minister of Finance, Peter Bethlenfalvy, emphasized the broader impact of the investment: “Community centers and recreational facilities are more than just buildings; they are where our children, families, and seniors can connect, play, and enjoy life. This investment is pivotal in supporting the wellbeing of all Ontarians.”
Mr. Amarjot Sandhu, MPP for Brampton West, added, “This strategic investment will bolster the sport and recreation sector, which was responsible for contributing approximately $2.6 billion to Ontario’s economy in 2021 and supported about 38,000 jobs.”
