BRAMPTON — The City of Brampton has released a shocking list of the top 10 speeding violations recorded by its automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras, highlighting just how extreme reckless driving has become on city streets — including one driver clocked at 200 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
The list, shared Monday by Regional Councillor Rowena Santos (Wards 1 & 5), comes as part of her “final plea” to Ontario Premier Doug Ford to reconsider his plan to ban photo radar across the province.
“Mr. Premier — I know you’re angry. So am I,” Santos said in a statement. “It’s wrong for some municipalities to issue tickets for going just a few kilometres over the limit — I want you to put a stop to that. But it’s also wrong and dangerous for motorists to stunt drive, especially in school zones — I want you to put a stop to that too.”
Premier Ford has called photo radar a “municipal cash grab” and vowed to eliminate the technology in Ontario as part of his government’s red tape reduction bill. However, Santos and several other municipal leaders argue that speed cameras have saved lives and made school zones safer, urging the province to reform, not remove, the program.
Brampton has made a major investment in road safety, deploying 185 ASE cameras citywide and opening a ticket processing centre in 2024. The city’s program has focused on high-risk areas and school zones, with threshold settings aimed at catching stunt and excessive speeding, not minor infractions.
As part of her campaign, Santos released a Vimeo video showcasing the 10 most extreme speeding incidents caught on camera since the program began five years ago.
Here’s the list of Brampton’s worst recorded speeding violations:
- 200 km/h in a 50 km/h zone — McVean Drive north of Tappet Drive
- 186 km/h in a 40 km/h zone — Heart Lake Road north of Copperfield Road
- 172 km/h in a 50 km/h zone — Clarkway Drive south of Castle Oaks Crossing
- 153 km/h in a 40 km/h zone — Cottrelle Boulevard east of Valleycreek Drive
- 143 km/h in a 40 km/h zone — Worthington Avenue south of Spencer Drive
- 142 km/h in a 40 km/h zone — Financial Drive north of Plentwood Drive
- 139 km/h in a 50 km/h zone — Rutherford Road N south of Madoc Drive
- 137 km/h in a 50 km/h zone — Central Park Drive north of Hanover Road
- 137 km/h in a 40 km/h zone — North Park Drive south of Nuttall Street
- 137 km/h in a 50 km/h zone — Central Park Drive east of Goldcrest Road

“Brampton and other municipalities implemented this public safety tool responsibly,” Santos said. “We urge the premier to allow speed cameras in school zones, set fair thresholds that target dangerous driving — not minor infractions — and ensure fines that deter reckless drivers while protecting children and families.”
The debate over Ontario’s photo radar ban continues to intensify as the province prepares to table its legislation this fall, setting up a political clash between Queen’s Park and city councils fighting to keep the technology on their streets.
