20 Charged in York Region Break-Ins Tied to ‘Crime Tourism’

York Regional Police have charged 20 individuals with over 200 offenses following a series of residential break-ins linked to “crime tourism.” The investigation, known as Project Dusk, was initiated to address a notable increase in break-and-enters during the fall Daylight Saving Time period.

Detective Sergeant Pat Smyth explained that the Greater Toronto Area experiences a seasonal surge in such crimes due to organized theft groups from Latin America and Eastern Europe. These groups reportedly enter Canada in the fall and return to their home countries in the spring after committing numerous offenses.

The suspects are accused of targeting homes between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., often waiting for residents to leave for errands or social activities. They allegedly used signal jammers to disable security systems, including cell phone and Wi-Fi signals, before forcibly entering homes. Items stolen ranged from jewelry and handbags to electronics, cash, and irreplaceable sentimental possessions.

One victim recounted the emotional toll of the break-in, describing how her home was ransacked and precious family heirlooms, including her late father’s wedding band, were stolen. She emphasized the profound impact on her family’s sense of security and the irreplaceable loss of cherished memories.

Authorities have disrupted and dismantled six separate crime groups as part of the operation. They urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help combat such organized criminal activities.
