Peel Regional Police officers have been cleared of any charges following an investigation into the October 21 arrest of a man who sustained a broken jaw after multiple takedowns during a police chase.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), officers first attempted to pull over a Mercedes at a gas station near Matheson Boulevard after spotting illegal window tinting. However, the driver sped away, veering into oncoming traffic to evade police.
- Officers later spotted the vehicle on Cancross Court and attempted another stop.
- The driver crashed into a police cruiser and then attempted to flee on foot.
- Officers tackled the suspect and deployed a taser during the arrest.
- The suspect fell and struck his face, suffering a broken left jaw.
A loaded handgun was recovered during a search of the suspect, the SIU confirmed.
SIU investigators determined that the suspect was taken down a second time after he attempted to “move away” while in custody. Despite the serious injury sustained, SIU Director Joseph Martino ruled that the use of force was justified, stating:
“In light of the complainant’s protracted resistance, I am unable to reasonably conclude that the officer acted precipitously in forcing the complainant to the ground.”
The SIU investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury, firearm discharge, or allegations of sexual assault.
The suspect’s name has not been released, and no further legal action is being taken against the officers involved.
