GTA Faces Major Disruptions After 25 cm Snowfall, Another Storm Expected This Weekend

oronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are working to recover from the largest snowfall in more than three years, as city crews scramble to clear streets and more snow is in the forecast for the weekend.

According to Environment Canada, Toronto Pearson International Airport recorded 26 cm of snowfall between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, while downtown Toronto saw 21 cm. This marks the biggest single-day snowfall in the city since January 2022.

The heavy snowfall shut down schools, disrupted transit services, and delayed flights at Pearson Airport. GO Transit and TTC adjusted their schedules to deal with snow-covered tracks and roads, while Canada Post suspended mail delivery provincewide due to unsafe conditions.

Police services across the GTA responded to hundreds of collisions and stranded vehicles, as treacherous road conditions led to significant traffic delays.

City of Toronto officials say plowing operations will continue into Friday, urging residents to keep sidewalks and driveways clear and to avoid parking on snow routes while cleanup efforts remain underway.

“This is going to be an activation that will continue throughout the next two days,” said Vincent Sferrazza, the city’s Director of Transportation Services.

Although the storm has passed, Environment Canada warns that more snowfall is expected over the weekend. Friday will bring a mix of sun and clouds, but light snow is forecast to begin near midnight.

Additional snowfall is expected on Saturday and Sunday, with daytime highs hovering around -2°C.

As Toronto continues to dig out from the storm, residents are advised to stay updated on road conditions, transit schedules, and ongoing snow removal efforts in preparation for the next wave of winter weather.
