Ontario Snowstorm Halts Mail Service as Canada Post Issues Red Alert

Canada Post has suspended all mail delivery across Ontario today as a powerful winter storm blankets the province in heavy snow. The Crown corporation issued a “red delivery service alert” Thursday morning, citing dangerous conditions that make mail delivery unsafe.

“A red service alert means that we are suspending delivery for the day and not sending our delivery agents out or recalling them,” Canada Post said in a statement. “There will also be no regular collection or delivery of mail during red alerts.”

The storm has dumped massive amounts of snow across Ontario, with Toronto Pearson International Airport recording 26 cm of snowfall in just 24 hours—more than the entire snowfall recorded at the airport in January. In Ottawa, snowfall totals reached nearly 30 cm.

The extreme weather has also forced school closures across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond, adding to the widespread disruptions.

Mail Service to Resume When Conditions Improve

Canada Post assured customers that delivery will resume once it is safe to do so, emphasizing that employee safety is the top priority.

“We encourage customers to clear the snow and ice from their walkways, stairs, and driveways to ensure safe access to the front door for both their visitors, as well as their mail carriers, when service resumes,” the statement added.

As Ontario digs out from the storm, residents should expect delays in mail service until conditions improve.
