‘A Senseless Crime’: Caregiver Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Death of 2-Year-Old Manitoba Girl

A 56-year-old caregiver has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a two-year-old girl from Bloodvein First Nation in Manitoba.

The tragic incident came to light on January 24 when the young child was brought to the local nursing station with severe injuries. Bloodvein RCMP were called to the scene, where they were informed that the child had been pronounced dead.

The following day, the RCMP’s major crimes unit and forensic identification service executed a search warrant at the home where the child had been living. An autopsy conducted on Monday confirmed that the toddler’s death was a homicide, resulting from her injuries.

Burma Skye, 56, of Bloodvein First Nation, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the girl’s death. Skye, who was the child’s primary caregiver, has been remanded into custody.

Sgt. Laura LeDrew, the lead investigator with the RCMP major crimes services, expressed the profound impact of the tragedy.

“The homicide of a two-year-old girl is not just a loss for her family but a profound loss to the community,” LeDrew said. “This is a senseless crime that will have a profound impact on the community, first responders, and investigating officers. Our number one priority right now is seeking justice for the victim.”

The RCMP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. The case has sent shockwaves through the small community of Bloodvein First Nation, leaving residents grappling with the loss of a young life under such tragic circumstances.
