Clear Out Your Trash: Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon to Benefit from Garbage Exemption Period

Unlimited Garbage Pickup Coming to Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon
Peel Region residents are getting the green light to clear out their trash with the return of the garbage exemption period, scheduled from January 27 to February 7. During this two-week window, households in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon can dispose of unlimited garbage on their regular collection day without purchasing additional tags

The exemption applies to items typically disposed of in grey garbage bins. However, the region is reminding residents that the exemption is not an opportunity to discard everything indiscriminately. Certain items, such as electronics, are not eligible for curbside collection and should instead be taken to a Peel Community Recycling Centre (CRC).

  1. Collection Schedule:
    • Extra garbage must be placed out on your regular garbage collection day within the exemption period.
    • Garbage will not be picked up on recycling collection days.
    • Garbage carts and excess garbage may be collected at different times of the day, so ensure items are left out until 8 p.m.
  2. Placement of Garbage:
    • Smaller items should be placed in garbage bags, while larger items should be placed separately on the curb.
    • Excess garbage must be placed next to your garbage cart, with at least 1 meter (3 feet) of space between the cart and the extra bags.
  3. Weight and Size Limits for Garbage Bags:
    • Bags must weigh no more than 20 kg (44 lbs).
    • Bags must measure no larger than 66 cm (26 in) wide and 90 cm (35 in) high, and no smaller than 30 cm (12 in) wide and 30 cm (12 in) high.

To determine if an item is eligible for curbside pickup or needs to be taken to a CRC, residents are encouraged to use Peel Region’s waste sorter tool online.

This initiative provides a great opportunity for residents to declutter their homes and dispose of additional waste responsibly. However, adherence to the rules and proper placement of items is key to ensuring a smooth and efficient collection process for all households.
