Mississauga Location Among Closures, Brand to Introduce New Concepts
Toys “R” Us Canada has announced plans to close five stores across Ontario, including its long-standing location on Hurontario Street in Mississauga. The closures come as part of the toy retailer’s efforts to “optimize” operations and revamp its business model.
The affected stores include:
- Argyle Mall, London
- Steeles Avenue West, Thornhill
- Hurontario Street, Mississauga
- Marcus Drive, Sudbury
- Centennial Parkway North, Stoney Creek
The company did not disclose how many jobs will be impacted by these closures.
New Concepts to Redefine Toys “R” Us Stores
In addition to closing certain locations, Toys “R” Us Canada is reshaping its inventory strategy to make way for new store concepts. Some locations will expand their collaboration with HMV, a standalone entertainment banner introduced within the toy retailer’s stores last year.
Other stores will be remodeled to include the Wonderlab concept, first tested in Burlington, Ontario. This interactive space features an indoor play structure, arts and crafts areas, and sensory activities designed to enhance the shopping experience for families and children.
A Brand with History and Challenges
The Mississauga store, a familiar sight on Hurontario Street since the early 1990s, is among the locations closing. The Toys “R” Us brand, launched in the U.S. in 1948, expanded to Canada in 1984.
While the U.S. operations filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017 and now primarily operate within Macy’s department stores, Toys “R” Us Canada operates independently. After seeking creditor protection, the Canadian arm was sold to Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. for $300 million and is now owned by Putman Investments, which also owns Everest Toys, Sunrise Records, and HMV.
Mississauga Store Among Pop-Up HMV Locations
Earlier this year, pop-up HMV stores debuted in Toys “R” Us locations, including Mississauga, reflecting the brand’s ongoing efforts to diversify its offerings.
Despite the closures, Toys “R” Us Canada remains committed to reimagining its stores and introducing innovative concepts to adapt to a changing retail landscape.
