Benefit Cheque Scam Targets Canadians: CRA Issues Warning

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has issued a warning about a new scam targeting Canadians related to the recently proposed $250 Working Canadians Rebate.

Scammers are sending fraudulent text messages claiming to provide instructions for depositing the rebate money. The CRA has clarified that it does not communicate through text messages about benefits, credits, rebates, tax refunds, or payments.

Key Points to Keep in Mind:

  • Do not reply to such text messages.
  • Avoid clicking on any links included in suspicious messages.

The $250 Working Canadians Rebate, announced by the Trudeau government alongside the proposed GST holiday, is intended to support eligible Canadians. However, the rebate’s approval is still uncertain due to political disagreements.

If approved, eligible Canadians will receive the rebate in early spring 2025, either by direct deposit or cheque, without needing to take any action.

Stay vigilant and report suspicious activity to protect yourself from fraud. For more information, visit the official CRA website.
