Brampton Breaks Ground on Third Transit Facility, Expands Transit Capacity and Sustainability Initiatives

The City of Brampton has officially commenced construction of its third transit facility, marking a key milestone in enhancing the city’s public transportation infrastructure. Mayor Patrick Brown was joined by Regional Councillor Paul Vicente, MP Maninder Sidhu, MPP Prabmeet Sarkaria, and other officials to break ground on the Cadetta Johnston Transit Facility, located at Highway 50 and Cadetta Road. The facility aims to boost Brampton Transit’s capacity while aligning with the city’s sustainability goals.

The new Cadetta Johnston Transit Facility is being funded with $128.1 million from federal and provincial sources through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). This includes up to $69.9 million from the Government of Canada and up to $58.2 million from the Government of Ontario. The City of Brampton is contributing $154.8 million in city funding to complete Phase One of the facility’s construction.

Honoring Local Heritage
The facility is named in honor of the Johnston family, who settled on these lands in the 19th century and continue to operate a family farm nearby. The commemorative naming acknowledges their longstanding contributions to Brampton’s food and agriculture sector.

Supporting Transit Growth and Sustainability
The first phase of the facility will accommodate approximately 250 buses, with the infrastructure designed to support future electrification. This project will significantly aid Brampton Transit’s growth, which has exceeded pre-pandemic ridership levels, making it the fastest-growing big city transit system in Canada. The city is actively advocating for full electrification to align with its Community Energy and Emissions Reduction Plan, which targets an 80% emissions reduction compared to standard building codes.
