ONTARIO — Ontario Provincial Police are warning residents about a dangerous social media trend known as the “door kick challenge,” in which participants forcefully kick residential front doors at night while someone records the act for social media.
Police in Collingwood and Sudbury say the trend, also called “donkey kick doors,” appears to be spreading in Ontario after similar incidents were reported in the United States.
Authorities warn the so-called prank can cause property damage, fear and distress for homeowners, especially when incidents happen late at night and residents believe someone may be trying to break in.
Police say participants could also face criminal charges, including mischief under the Criminal Code.
Residents are advised to keep exterior lights on, use doorbell or security cameras where possible, and report suspicious activity or video evidence to police. Parents and guardians are also being encouraged to speak with young people about the risks and consequences of taking part.
The OPP says what may seem like an online prank can quickly become a serious safety issue for both the homeowner and the person carrying it out.
