Toronto, July 24: Ontario recorded no new wildfires over the past 24 hours, providing a brief respite from what officials believe could become the province’s most destructive wildfire season on record.
According to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, there are currently 177 active wildfires burning across the province. While no additional fires were reported during the latest reporting period, many existing fires remain active and continue to pose significant challenges for emergency crews.
More than 1,800 residents remain displaced as evacuation orders continue in several northern communities.
The wildfire crisis has had a particularly severe impact on Indigenous communities, with 12 of the 13 evacuated communities being First Nations.
Many evacuees have sought temporary shelter in Thunder Bay, while others have been relocated to communities farther south, including Toronto and Niagara Falls, where governments and relief organizations continue to provide accommodation and support.
The scale of the disaster has prompted Indigenous leaders to renew calls for a public inquiry into Ontario’s wildfire preparedness and emergency response.
They argue that several remote communities were left largely to manage the crisis on their own and are seeking an independent review of how governments responded to the unprecedented wildfire season.
Premier Doug Ford has rejected suggestions that the province failed to prepare adequately.
Speaking earlier this week, Ford said his government did everything possible to respond to the rapidly spreading fires and support affected communities.
The 2026 wildfire season has already burned an unprecedented area of forest across northern Ontario, damaging homes, infrastructure and traditional lands while forcing repeated evacuations in remote First Nations.
Fire crews, emergency management officials and military support personnel continue to battle the remaining blazes as weather conditions are closely monitored for any changes that could influence fire behaviour.
Although the absence of new wildfires offers a measure of relief, officials caution that the wildfire emergency is far from over, with numerous large fires still burning and thousands of residents unable to return home.
