HAMILTON, July 3, 2026 — The Hamilton community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of seven-year-old Nathanael Selambi, who was found deceased following an extensive search after he went missing at Binbrook Conservation Area on Canada Day.
The young boy disappeared at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday while at the conservation area located on Harrison Road. His disappearance prompted a large-scale search involving Hamilton Police, emergency responders, specialized search teams, community partners and volunteers who worked tirelessly in the hope of locating him safely.
The search came to a tragic conclusion shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Thursday when members of Peel Regional Police’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit located the child’s body. Hamilton Police Service, working in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Coroner, is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police have confirmed that there is no indication of foul play and that the death is not being treated as suspicious. Authorities have extended their deepest condolences to Nathanael’s family and all those affected by the tragedy, while expressing appreciation to the many emergency personnel, partner agencies and members of the public who assisted during the search effort.
Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath said she was heartbroken by the devastating news and offered sincere condolences to Nathanael’s family, loved ones, classmates and everyone grieving the unimaginable loss. She also thanked Hamilton Police, emergency responders, community organizations, volunteers and residents whose compassion and dedication reflected the strength and unity of the Hamilton community during an incredibly difficult time.
The tragic incident has deeply affected families across the region and serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of water safety and constant supervision of children at parks, beaches and conservation areas, particularly during the busy summer season.
