Trump’s $14.7-Million Reflecting Pool Makeover Turns Green, Fueling Criticism and Mockery

What was intended to be a patriotic showcase ahead of America’s 250th anniversary has instead become an unexpected symbol of controversy and embarrassment for U.S. President Donald Trump, as the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington has been overrun by algae and damaged by what the White House describes as vandalism.

The iconic 2,028-foot pool, which stretches between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument and famously served as the backdrop for Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, now presents a murky green appearance that has attracted crowds of curious tourists and television crews eager to witness the spectacle firsthand.

Trump had championed the $14.7-million project as part of his broader campaign to beautify the nation’s capital, criticizing previous administrations for allowing the landmark to deteriorate. He awarded the project to a Virginia-based company through a no-bid contract and celebrated the completion of the rehabilitation, describing the new dark-blue coating as “American flag blue.”

However, only weeks after the work was declared finished, a significant algae bloom transformed the water into a vivid green, while sections of the new liner reportedly began peeling and floating to the surface. Visitors described the scene as disappointing, with some lamenting that attention had shifted from the monument’s historical significance to the controversy surrounding its renovation.

The president has blamed vandalism for the damage, claiming saboteurs cut the liner, polluted the water and even marked anti-Trump messages into nearby grass. Authorities reportedly arrested several individuals, although one of those named publicly denied any involvement. Trump has vowed severe penalties for anyone found responsible.

The contractor responsible for the project insists that the damage affects only a small section of the seven-acre installation and does not indicate a failure of the overall design. Nevertheless, critics have seized upon the situation as another example of poor planning and questionable decision-making.

Historians and political commentators note that the reflecting pool holds deep symbolic significance in American history, making its current condition particularly striking. Some argue the episode reflects a broader pattern of prioritizing appearance over substance, while others see it as a metaphor for political dysfunction and mismanagement.

Despite ongoing international crises and domestic challenges, the deteriorating condition of one of Washington’s most recognizable landmarks has become an unexpected talking point. Images of murky water, floating debris and even reports of dead wildlife have circulated widely on social media, turning the site into an unlikely tourist attraction.

For critics, the troubled renovation has become an ironic monument to a presidency that often seeks grand displays and dramatic transformations. For supporters, it remains a project that can still be repaired.

Either way, what was meant to symbolize national renewal has instead become one of Washington’s most talked-about and controversial sights.
