Auto Thefts Continue to Decline in Brampton, But 160 Vehicles Still Stolen in Just One Month

Vehicle theft remains a major concern in Brampton despite a noticeable decline in incidents compared with previous years. New data released through the Peel Regional Police crime mapping system shows that 160 vehicles were reported stolen across Brampton between May 8 and June 8, 2026.

The figures reveal that auto theft continues to impact neighbourhoods throughout the city, although police are reporting encouraging progress in reducing overall theft rates. During the same period in 2025, Peel police recorded 193 vehicle thefts in Brampton. The latest numbers represent a 17.1 per cent year-over-year decrease.

As of June 10, police had recorded 858 vehicle thefts in Brampton since the beginning of 2026. While the number remains significant, it reflects a broader downward trend across Peel Region following several years of record-breaking auto theft activity.

Auto theft reached an all-time high in Brampton and Mississauga in 2023, when a combined 8,322 vehicles were reported stolen. By 2025, that number had fallen substantially to 5,280 thefts, representing a decline of more than 36 per cent.

Police credit enhanced enforcement efforts, specialized auto theft investigations, increased public awareness, and collaboration with provincial and federal partners for helping reduce vehicle thefts throughout the region.

The latest crime mapping data shows thefts occurring across many parts of Brampton, with incidents concentrated in residential neighbourhoods, shopping areas, and locations where vehicles are commonly parked overnight. The crime mapping tool provides approximate locations of reported thefts and helps residents understand trends within their communities.

Top Vehicle Models Targeted by Auto Thieves

Earlier this year, Peel police identified the vehicle models most frequently targeted by thieves in Brampton and Mississauga over the past five years. The list highlights a mix of pickup trucks, SUVs, and passenger vehicles that remain attractive targets due to their popularity, resale value, and demand in domestic and international markets.

The most frequently stolen vehicles include:

  1. Ram 1500
  2. Honda CR-V
  3. Toyota Highlander
  4. Ford F-150
  5. Jeep Wrangler
  6. Honda Civic
  7. Range Rover Sport
  8. Honda Accord
  9. Toyota Tundra
  10. Lexus RX

Police continue to encourage vehicle owners to take preventative measures, including parking inside garages whenever possible, using steering wheel locks, installing tracking devices, activating factory-installed anti-theft systems, and ensuring key fobs are stored in signal-blocking pouches to prevent electronic relay theft.

Although the decline in thefts is a positive sign, the theft of 160 vehicles in a single month demonstrates that organized auto theft remains a significant challenge. Peel Regional Police are urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately as law enforcement continues efforts to disrupt criminal networks involved in vehicle theft and trafficking.

For Brampton residents, the message from police is clear: progress is being made, but protecting your vehicle remains as important as ever
