FIFA World Cup 2026 Set to Make History as Biggest Tournament Ever Across Canada, USA and Mexico

The countdown is over as the FIFA World Cup 2026 prepares to kick off, marking the largest and most ambitious edition of the world’s most celebrated sporting event.

For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, 48 nations will compete for football’s ultimate prize, expanding the tournament from 32 teams and creating a record-breaking schedule of 104 matches across Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

The tournament will officially begin on June 12 with host nation Mexico taking on South Africa in Mexico City, while co-host Canada will launch its World Cup campaign the following day in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The championship match is scheduled for July 20 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where the next world champion will be crowned.

The expanded format introduces 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from every group, along with the eight best third-place finishers, will advance to a newly created Round of 32, adding an extra knockout stage and increasing the number of matches from 64 to 104.

Canada will be one of the focal points of the tournament, with Toronto and Vancouver serving as host cities. Toronto’s BMO Field, temporarily renamed Toronto Stadium for the tournament, will host several high-profile matches, including Canada’s opening game. Vancouver will also welcome fans from around the world as part of the country’s largest-ever sporting event.

Football powerhouses including Brazil, Argentina, France, England, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands are among the favourites expected to challenge for the trophy. The tournament will also showcase emerging football nations from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Middle East, reflecting FIFA’s goal of expanding global participation.

Among the most anticipated group-stage encounters are Brazil versus Morocco, France versus Senegal, Argentina versus Algeria, England versus Croatia, Portugal versus Colombia, and Uruguay versus Spain. Canada’s matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland are expected to draw massive national attention.

The tournament is also expected to generate billions of dollars in economic activity through tourism, hospitality, transportation, retail spending and global media exposure. Host cities have spent years preparing stadiums, transportation networks, security operations and fan festivals to accommodate millions of visitors and viewers.

Toronto is preparing for a summer unlike any other, with international visitors, cultural celebrations and fan events expected to transform the city into one of the major hubs of global football. Local businesses, hotels, restaurants and tourism operators are anticipating a significant boost from the influx of fans.

As the world’s biggest sporting spectacle returns to North America, excitement continues to build among supporters eager to witness history. With more teams, more matches, more host cities and more fans than ever before, FIFA World Cup 2026 promises to be a landmark event that will redefine the scale and reach of international football for generations to come.
